Moving Quick-Lee

Hey everyone! Man it’s been a while and so much happening. So much madness I don’t even know where to begin. I’ve been back and forth between Nashville and Illinois for one thing or another for the past several months with the love of my life Laurie Ann. She has been a huge surprise in my life and I am floating! Over the summer I got to do a few gigs around town with CJ Watson, one of Nashville’s true gems. Good times and he’s the best. Make sure you check out any event he’s putting on! One of the most fun tasks of the summer was the filming of the “Last Night’s Dream” video. I can’t wait to release it so hopefully soon I’ll get to lay it on ya

Yes, yes the summer has come and gone without a Millennium Blues release, as hoped, but it’s all for a good reason. I know I haven’t had any news for a while but much has been in the works with some pretty big and important changes. My work with Norrisong Productions has really paid off and has attracted an incredible addition to the team. I couldn’t be more excited and honored to have Lee Popa stepping into the producer’s chair from Los Angeles alongside my longtime friend and producer David Norris. Having worked with the likes of Cheap Trick, White Zombie, Rolling Stones, Ministry, Tool, and countless others, Lee brings a ton of experience, good ‘ole fashioned know-how, and a hard-to-match rock n’ roll heart that’s gonna bring all this to the next level. And most importantly I simply love this man! So everything I’ve said for the last year… scratch it. We’re gonna need a bigger boat….

As of now the band is being formed and rehearsed with some great chaps and it seems I seriously need a haircut. It’s pretty ridiculous. Or hell, maybe not. I don’t know.

One Last Thing…

So we’re headed toward release for “Millennium Blues” and as I look back I can’t believe all we’ve been able to accomplish. A few deadlines have run late, but all in the name of quality. I was thankful to have one last vocal session in November with my girl Jonell Mosser. I can’t thank her enough for lending her pipes to this album. Let me tell you, she has really contributed something special and at the same time I’ve gotten to know this cat as an artist more and more. What a totally groovy chick, man. Such a cat. You can’t pull enough energy into an album, and she’ll get you some damn energy. You’ll see what I’m talking about. Hey, if you ever get an opportunity to see Jonell live do it! Make sure you get there early or you’ll be standing. Thanks, Sweetheart!

So I’ve added an 11th cut on the album pushing it back another few weeks but that’s it! The checklist is getting thinner and thinner and this sucker is about to be wrapped and ready to ship. New Suicide King video is coming up shortly… and getting ready to start on the video for “Changin’ Mind”.

The Final Chapter

It’s been a while since my last update so I thought I would drop a line and let everyone know what’s going on with the progress of the album. We took a good bit of time off at Norrisong Productions and it was much needed. I know what you’re thinking “this better be good with how long it’s taking”. Don’t worry, it will be. The time off was much needed because we packed a lot of work into a short amount of time over the last six months. I’m ready to get the ball rolling and get ready for release. It’s sad to see production end, actually, as I have spent so much time with it, but it’s time to wrap it up. Just to give you an idea of how much has gone into “Millenium Blues” and the time it has taken I have already written the follow up album during it’s production!

All Texas Glory

There’s one thing about the Midwest that always stays the same. You can’t escape the heat. Travel 600 miles and you’re still cookin’.

Been living out of a suitcase for about month and a half starting out in Nashville, which I will be heading back to as soon as I wrap things up here in Fort Worth. Can’t complain though as I’ve needed to get out for a while and it’s good to be back in the old stomping grounds of Fort Worth. Some things have changed a lot, some haven’t changed at all. My neighborhood is very much the same and it’s really bringing back memories. It’s actually been sensory overload. This late-afternoon glow on the concrete in the metroplex is really very different than anywhere else. I don’t know what it is. I think people that call North Texas home know exactly what I’m talking about. Not to get too far out there, point is I’m just soaked with nostalgia and realizing things about me that have never left me inside.

Been working on some songs with my best friend Shawn Summerhill that’s long overdue. It’s been so long since we’ve gotten to be in the same room together and create. He’s certainly one of my musical kindred spirits and can’t wait until he gets his stuff in full swing. He’s also one hell of an artist too and I’m lucky enough to be here for one of his exhibits this Saturday. Couldn’t have asked for a better time to get back home for a while. But it’s back to the grind soon at good ‘ole Norrisong Productions to get this album done and in your hands once and for all.

Slaves And Bulldozers

Hey everybody,

Just wanted to give everyone a catch-up on the “Millennium Blues” project. If you haven’t already subscribed to the ‘ole blog here do that now. And don’t forget to link up with me on Facebook. So we cut the tracks on July 29th and we’ve been getting the final work put in on Millennium Blues. I’ve just left Nashville after getting most of the details taken care of. It was a busy month at Norrisong. It was great getting the cast together again and it was a special treat to introduce pedal steel legend Bruce Bouton into the mix. The results were nothing less than crucial.

There is no release date for the album thus far, but we’re shooting for fall, which can’t get here soon enough because it is freakin’ hot! When that date happens you’ll be the first to know. As of now I am off to Dallas for some promotional work and good ‘ole fashion hangin’ out. It’s good to get out of the cave for a while before coming right back for final mix downs. I didn’t realize it, but since the 26th of July I’ve spent every day but 3 at Norrisong hard at work. Pretty crazy.

Pretty soon we should have a release of the album artwork and you don’t want to miss that! Trust me…

We’re in the home stretch. I’ll talk to you soon.

Destination Nashville

Alright, getting packed up and ready to drive a few miles to Nashville and start “hell week” which will begin Monday morning at Norrisong Productions and end sometime into Thursday night after the final recording session. Having started this project back in November we’ve finally got all the ducks in a row to get into the big studio and get this all laid down. I have a final song list (which wasn’t easy, by the way), we’re all casted and ready to go kick it’s ass. The sound of “Millennium Blues” is definitely different than anything I’ve done before and it will be a blast getting this vision brought to reality. I’ll be working with an outstanding team this time around also, headed up again by producer David Norris. He’s tied together quite the cast that includes Buddy Hyatt (keys/band leader) and Jim Hyatt (bass), Danny Parks (elec guitar), Wayne Killius (drums), Bobby Terry (guitars), and Bruce Bouton (pedal/lap steel).

I’ll have some other news to report as soon as all the tracking and mixing is done. We’ll serve no wine before it’s time.

Help Out Nashville Music

Just wanted to post a reminder that Nashville is still in great need of any help/donations that you can spare. In Nashville many livelihoods are made through the music industry one way or another. This is thousands upon thousands of people. Most of this work is freelance or contracted work that is done out of the home or mobilized to a specific location. With an estimated $1.5 billion in damage and climbing, it’s easy to consider how much of that is the loss of musical gear and facilities. The photo above is of Soundcheck Nashville. Your favorite major country artist and even lesser known rock band from Nashville likely rehearsed there. Aside from the business itself being underwater and unable to function, much musical equipment belonging to Soundcheck and others who rent there took damage. This is just one example to help explain how far-reaching the effects of the flood have been throughout the Nashville music community.

You can help the Nashville music community via MusiCares Nashville, a program through the Grammy Foundation that aids those that make their living in music. If you can, please give today to help our musical brothers and sisters in Music City.

Amidst The Flood – Nashville

It was a hell of a weekend to decide to come spend some time in Nashville. Early morning, May 1st, the bottom fell out of the sky, and before anyone even had a chance to dread it, the city of Nashville found itself beneath the surface of some 14″ of accumulated rain in just 36 hours. Creeks and rivers were overrun, levees broke, buildings floated down highways instead of cars. Railroad tracks were cut in two, NFL football fields became swimming pools, Opryland evacuated and submerged, downtown resembling Venice. But that’s the best of it. Thousands of homes have been destroyed, thousands of lives have been detoured, many lives have been lost, and this Music City that I’ve gotten to know more and more in the last five years has found itself in dire straits.

I was fortunate to be staying with my producer and dear friend David Norris during all of this on higher ground in East Nashville. Too many others were not as lucky and have lost everything, therefore anything that can be donated is a great help to many. Please visit the Red Cross to find out how to help with monetary donations. If you have any items to spare find out how to get them into the hands of flood victims here.

Album And Shows

Back from Dallas and it is certainly good to be back home. I’ll tell ya, what I thought was going to be just a get-away back home turned out to be quite the memorable trip. Each day was a different flavor and I have to say it’s even the first time I’ve experienced snow and 75 degree weather only two days later. Typical Texas.

But yes, we’re heading into summer and it’s going to be an exciting one. Very soon will come the announcement of when the recording will be going down along with the final song list. Being compiled is a lot of work materials such as demos and song snippets for all to hear to get caught up on where this project started, leaving only the mystery of what will be when the mics go live.

I am also in the process of lining up some dates in the Midwest and I will be announcing those as we head into summer. Lots of stuff on the way! I won’t leave you with nothing, however. Here’s a demo from a few years ago of one of the songs on the coming album, “No One Knows”:

Bring It Home

Now that pre-production is finished it’s time for a bit of a sabbatical. I’m headin’ back home to Fort Worth, TX for some hang time with some old and new friends under the Texas sky. Perfect timing too with the end of winter just behind us. Maybe we’ll hit some thunderstorms on the way to or back from Texas. For the most part I’ll be spending some time with the demos, getting some time in with my peeps, and doing some writing with my friend and cohort Shawn Summerhill. I’m sure the two of us will crash an open mic night or two along the way… good times. Pre-Production Finished, Demo

After a very brutal week in Nashville, pre-production for the album is finished. Over the next month song selection and casting will be completed for tracking in mid-April. Can’t wait for the tracking sessions to hear what noise is made once the rubber hits the road.

Pre-production Update: Penniless And Poor

Some scheduling changes have extended the pre-production session by a few days. Guitar and vocal tracks for the “Never Gonna Change” demo have been moved to today after re-thinking the time line a bit. Last night was spent getting the arrangement and rhythm tracks down for the song “Penniless And Poor”. It was more efficient to do the guitar and vocal tracks all in one day. It sure is a luxury getting to demo these songs out and really thinking them through before going into the studio and it’s certainly the part I enjoy the most about the recording process.

David Norris took me to dinner last night and I finally got my chilis pablanos at Las Maracas where we would have been joined by Jack Clayton if he didn’t decide to cheat on us with another meal. Anyway, these last three days are going to be rigorous and I’ll be back with more as soon as I can hopefully with some video and some demo snippets…

Pre-Production Session #3

Really looking forward to this next week at the “Norris Nuthouse” in Nashville, which will be one of the final pre-production weeks before we hit the studio for tracking. I am still very much in the song selection process, but the picture of this album is really starting to emerge with the new material we will be working on. David Norris will be very busy! Up to this point we have really taken this step by step making sure that all the “I”s are crossed and “T”s are dotted. I expect for this session to get the majority of the pre-production work done. We are returning many of the same players for this recording that cut the EP. Drummer Wayne Killius, guitarists Danny Parksand Bobby Terry will again be making an appearance. I’m also thrilled to have the Hyatt brothers back in the fold for a second go ’round. Another reason I’ve been looking forward to this trip is to catch up with some of my Nashville friends. If I don’t get to do Idle Hour with Dennis Eggers, vibe it with Vick Raye, and do dinner with Jack Clayton the week will be a failure. Failure I say!
