Having started this project back in November we’ve finally got all the ducks in a row to get into the big studio and get this all laid down. I have a final song list (which wasn’t easy, by the way), we’re all casted and ready to go kick it’s ass. The sound of “Millennium Blues” is definitely different than anything I’ve done before and it will be a blast getting this vision brought to reality. I’ll be working with an outstanding team this time around also, headed up again by producer David Norris. He’s tied together quite the cast that includes Buddy Hyatt (keys/band leader) and Jim Hyatt (bass), Danny Parks (elec guitar), Wayne Killius (drums), Bobby Terry (guitars), and Bruce Bouten (pedal/lap steel).

I’ll have some other news to report as soon as all the tracking and mixing is done. We’ll serve no wine before it’s time.

Here’s some snippets of the interview:

SB* Have you played in any other bands before?

Stacey* I have been in one other band outside of my own “band”. In 1994 I was in a hard rock band called The Hollowmen. Seems like a lifetime ago! Did it really even happen?

SB* How long have you been playing music?

Stacey* I started playing music in the 6th grade band, but I would say seriously playing and writing since just after high school.

SB* What instruments did you learn to play?

Stacey* First instrument I started on was trumpet. My father was a session player and performer in Hollywood in the 60s and 70s so it was really the instrument I knew the most about. That and bass guitar, as he played bass also. I picked that up in high school and really enjoyed it, but I found it really hard to write music on the bass so I transfered over to the guitar where I’ve been ever since. I have also dabbled around on piano as a writing tool as well.

SB* Where did you grow up?

Stacey* I grew up on the west side of Fort Worth, TX just a few miles from Carswell Air Force Base. I attended a private school for three years there and most of my life-long friends are from that time in that neighborhood. I moved to Mesqquite, TX for high school and left for California immediately after.

Just wanted to post a reminder that Nashville is still in great need of any help/donations that you can spare. In Nashville many livelihoods are made through the music industry one way or another. This is thousands upon thousands of people. Most of this work is freelance or contracted work that is done out of the home or mobilized to a specific location. With an estimated $1.5 billion in damage and climbing, it’s easy to consider how much of that is the loss of musical gear and facilities. The photo above is of Soundcheck Nashville. Your favorite major country artist and even lesser known rock band from Nashville likely rehearsed there. Aside from the business itself being underwater and unable to function, much musical equipment belonging to Soundcheck and others who rent there took damage. This is just one example to help explain how far-reaching the effects of the flood have been throughout the Nashville music community.

You can help the Nashville music community via MusiCares Nashville, a program through the Grammy Foundation that aids those that make their living in music. If you can, please give today to help our musical brothers and sisters in Music City.

Thanks so much,

It was a hell of a weekend to decide to come spend some time in Nashville. Early morning, May 1st, the bottom fell out of the sky, and before anyone even had a chance to dread it, the city of Nashville found itself beneath the surface of some 14″ of accumulated rain in just 36 hours. Creeks and rivers were overrun, levees broke, buildings floated down highways instead of cars. Railroad tracks were cut in two, NFL football fields became swimming pools, Opryland evacuated and submerged, downtown resembling Venice. But that’s the best of it. Thousands of homes have been destroyed, thousands of lives have been detoured, many lives have been lost, and this Music City that I’ve gotten to know more and more in the last five years has found itself in dire straits.

I was fortunate to be staying with my producer and dear friend David Norris during all of this on higher ground in East Nashville. Too many others were not as lucky and have lost everything, therefore anything that can be donated is a great help to many. Please visit the Red Cross to find out how to help with monetary donations. If you have any items to spare find out how to get them into the hands of flood victims <a href="http://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#!/event.php?eid=113883681985618 target="_blank"">here.

On behalf of myself and the Revival Underground family, thank you.

I’ll tell ya, what I thought was going to be just a get-away back home turned out to be quite the memorable trip. Each day was a different flavor and I have to say it’s even the first time I’ve experienced snow and 75 degree weather only two days later. Typical Texas.

But yes, we’re heading into summer and it’s going to be an exciting one. Very soon will come the announcement of when the recording will be going down along with the final song list. Being compiled is a lot of work materials such as demos and song snippets for all to hear to get caught up on where this project started, leaving only the mystery of what will be when the mics go live.

I am also in the process of lining up some dates in the Midwest and I will be announcing those as we head into summer. Lots of stuff on the way! I won’t leave you with nothing, however. Here’s a demo from a few years ago of one of the songs on the coming album, “No One Knows”:

I’m headin’ back home to Fort Worth, TX for some hang time with some old and new friends under the Texas sky. Perfect timing too with the end of winter just behind us. Maybe we’ll hit some thunderstorms on the way to or back from Texas. For the most part I’ll be spending some time with the demos, getting some time in with my peeps, and doing some writing with my friend and cohort Shawn Summerhill. I’m sure the two of us will crash an open mic night or two along the way… good times. If you’re in the Fort Worth area be checking the blog here for where we decide to go and maybe you can stop by and get a free CD, just say “hit me”.

I wish everyone a great week. Spring is here and it’s time to turn yourself over to the muse.

Yours,

The video, shot at Norrisong Productions, follows the recording of the pre-production tracks for the album. “Suicide King just fell out of my mouth one night a few years ago and I had been toting it around ever since. Usually Dave just looks at me weird when I bring out my new songs (laughs), but this one was right in his vein lyrically and I had to tap the source. He filled in those last few needed pieces and it was a really fun song to put together in the studio”, Blood says about the song. “More than all the rest he nailed this one from his chair as we went through it. I literally would be conceiving of an instance and before I could even bring it up it was playing over the speakers. It was scary and supernatural. Only fitting it’s the scariest song on the album I guess”.

About the video David Norris from Norrisong Productions had this to say: “Yeah, man we recorded it all by ourselves. We had the vision and the time so we just went for it and thought, you know, it’ll be the right thing to do. This is a crash course in how to decide to do a video on a whim and having it completed within ten hours!”.

Alright, got some video down and uploaded finally. We burned the midnight oil last night and this morning putting down guitar tracks for “Never Gonna Change” and a few on “Penniless And Poor”. As usual, rock n’ roll is the only reason I get out of bed every afternoon! A special thanks to David Norris’ vidiot kids Matt and Michael Norris and I thank them for not flashing their union cards on this one. This tune is really starting to come around. We’re doing a lot of experimenting with different sounds and feels but we’ve pretty much got this song nailed to the cross. Off to catch a few winks before we do vocals this afternoon. Will hopefully have video of that session as well.

Yours,

Some scheduling changes have extended the pre-production session by a few days. Guitar and vocal tracks for the “Never Gonna Change” demo have been moved to today after re-thinking the time line a bit. Last night was spent getting the arrangement and rhythm tracks down for the song “Penniless And Poor”. It was more efficient to do the guitar and vocal tracks all in one day. It sure is a luxury getting to demo these songs out and really thinking them through before going into the studio and it’s certainly the part I enjoy the most about the recording process.

David Norris took me to dinner last night and I finally got my chilis pablanos at Las Maracas where we would have been joined by Jack Clayton if he didn’t decide to cheat on us with another meal. Anyway, these last three days are going to be rigorous and I’ll be back with more as soon as I can hopefully with some video and some demo snippets…

Ciao

I wrote this song about two weeks ago and is obviously one of the newer songs Dave and I are fleshing out here at Norrisong. This song has moved along pretty easily and we’ve spent the majority of the time experimenting with B3 and Wurlitzer tracks and it’s from Mars, man! That’s what I get for leaving Dave unattended for ten minutes. Hopefully soon I’ll have some audio snippets up here at the website. I am starting to run out of patience, however, because I have not yet been to my favorite Nashville eating spot yet for my chilis pablanos. This is simply going to have to change quickly. And just heard a great blues cat named Ira Walker! That dude is for real!

Off now to the cave to cut guitar tracks and vocals for the “Never Gonna Change” demo. Talk soon.

Really looking forward to this next week at the “Norris Nuthouse” in Nashville, which will be one of the final pre-production weeks before we hit the studio for tracking. I am still very much in the song selection process, but the picture of this album is really starting to emerge with the new material we will be working on. David Norris will be very busy! Up to this point we have really taken this step by step making sure that all the “I”s are crossed and “T”s are dotted. I expect for this session to get the majority of the pre-production work done. We are returning many of the same players for this recording that cut the EP. Drummer Wayne Killius, guitarists Danny Parksand Bobby Terry will again be making an appearance. I’m also thrilled to have the Hyatt brothers back in the fold for a second go ’round. Another reason I’ve been looking forward to this trip is to catch up with some of my Nashville friends. If I don’t get to do Idle Hour with Dennis Eggers, vibe it with Vick Raye, and do dinner with Jack Clayton the week will be a failure. Failure I say!

Listen, my new Twitter account is set up so you can begin following me there throughout the week. My new Facebook page is up too, it’s a bit naked right now but will be posting updates with some really good stuff from the week so “fan up”, ya’ll.

Talk soon,

It’s gonna be an album. Stacey Blood is expanding his 2008 EP into his first major LP release. This yet-to-be titled album is not only an extension in concept, but in collaboration. Returning for the completion of the record will be Nashville rising star producer, David Norris, behind the glass and many of the same players as well as some new surprises. “It’s been kind of an adventure because material keeps coming out and then I re-check what’s going on here” explains Blood. “But I’m pretty sure about the song list, on the 1st of March is the final pre-production session and then we’re off”. So how hard is it to expand an EP into an LP from songs recorded 24 months ago? “It’s not that hard. All of these songs go together. The concept is there. We’re using the same studio, same players, and we’re even re-mixing the first four with the rest to build continuity.”

Blood says the album should be ready for release this summer.
